THE CHARTRES GLASS OF EAST CHURCH

THE ROSE WINDOW OF CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS

The Lamb of God is pictured in the center of the Rose Window at the back of the balcony with two adoring angels on either side.  In the eight petals of the rose, you will find at the top the symbol for communion, a cup and wafer.  In clockwise direction we find the circle, emblem of immortality.  The dove appears as the sign of peace. The crown and keys offer symbolism of the authority of Christ.  The fish is one of the earliest symbols for Christianity.  At the bottom of the Rose are the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.  The anchor symbolizes the soul’s security in Christianity. The crown of thorns pressed on the the brow of Jesus and the pitchers of wine and vinegar remind us of the last moments of the earthly life of Christ on the cross.  The dove and circles appear as signs of peace and immortality.
